What are brake pads and what do they do?
Most cars and light trucks are equipped with disc brakes on all four wheels. A Brake Disc system consists of three main components: the brake "disc" or rotor, a hydraulic piston assembly called the caliper assembly, and a pair of brake pads.
Disc brake pads are made of materials that generate friction. When the brake pedal is depressed, hydraulic pistons push the brake pads against the flat surfaces of the brake rotors, creating enough friction to bring the vehicle to a stop.
The braking process causes slight wear to the pads and rotors every time the brakes are used. This means they regularly wear out enough to affect the stopping power of your vehicle. When this happens, you must replace them immediately.
What is a good brake pad?
A good brake pad is more than its ability to stop a vehicle. The ability to absorb and dissipate heat, the rate of wear, and the amount of noise and dirt generated are all factors to consider when selecting brake pads.
It may be tempting to choose the brake pads with the lowest cost. However, it's important to remember that you do get what you pay for. Low-quality brake pads are noisier, wear faster, and can cause wear on other brake system components like brake rotors – which means more money in the long run.
What are the most common types of brake pads?
You'll find three main types of brake pads on passenger cars: asbestos-free organic brake pads, ceramic brake pads and semi-metallic brake pads.
If you have a high-performance sports car, or at least drive your vehicle like one, you're better off with semi-metallic brake pads. On the other hand, if you do a lot of urban commuting, you may find that solid ceramic brake pads are a better choice. If your vehicle doesn't have a lot of miles, organic brake pads may be the best low-cost option for your driving habits.
No matter which type you choose, have your brakes checked and pads replaced regularly. You'll know your pads need replacing when you hear the metal "clink" on the bottom of the pads making contact with the rotors and squealing.
